What to expect at your first online support group
At your first online support group you join a small video call, hear a short welcome, and then people take turns to share while others listen; you can just listen the whole time if you like, and nobody will put you on the spot.
Before the group
You save a spot in a group that fits what you're going through. On Heal Kinder you can test your camera and microphone before joining, and some groups let you keep your camera off.
During the group
The group opens with a welcome and a reminder that what's shared stays in the group. People introduce themselves with a first name and, if they like, how they're feeling today.
Then people take turns to share, often around a talking point. You can raise your hand to share, type in the chat, or pass. Groups usually close with a short round where everyone says one thing they're taking with them.
Tips for your first time
Find a quiet, private spot and use headphones if others are nearby. Arrive a minute or two early. Remember that everyone there was new once, and many felt nervous too.
Questions
Do I need to share at my first support group?
No. Listening is a completely normal way to take part, especially at first.
Do I need my camera on?
It depends on the group. Some ask for cameras on so everyone feels safe; in others you can keep it off.
Are online support groups recorded?
Heal Kinder groups are never recorded, and members agree not to record or screenshot a group.
